Any activity may result in injury or illness if not done properly and science activities at home in your kitchen are no exception. The following are some guidelines to consider before doing any experiment, really any activity. You may be able to think of more, so please add to the list.

• Plan your activity. Read any directions and think about what you are going to do.

• Think about what could possibly go wrong and be prepared.

• Have a clear and clean work area. Have a way to get away from an accident.

• Do one experiment at a time. Do each experiment one step at a time.

• Ensure you have fresh air in the room.

• Wear protective clothes such as an apron or old shirt to protect you and your clothes. If appropriate wear safety glasses or goggles, no contact lenses. Wear gloves to prevent skin stains.

• Wear shoes that cover your feet. Hot liquids can burn.

• Have a sink nearby and way to wash your eyes.

• Have a way to extinguish a fire, perhaps a fire extinguisher.

• Have a first aid kit. Take extra care with sharp objects and be prepared for cuts.

• Be orderly!!! Keep your work space organized, floor clear, clean. Clean up spills immediately.

• Be clean!!! Wash hands regularly. Do not eat or drink while doing experiments or in your work area.

• Never taste, eat or smell anything in your experiments unless a qualified expert says it is okay.

• Hot things burn!!! Use hot pads or tools when handling hot objects. Be extremely careful with hot liquids.

• Always read labels carefully. Know what you are using.

• Sharp objects cut or poke!! Use them with care.

• Electricity is dangerous. You can’t see it!!! Be very careful!!

• If you stand on a stool or step, be sure it is stable.

• Always clean up when finished. Clean equipment, work area and yourself.
